Everyone loves video games

Gaming is more popular than ever in the UK and not just with younger fans, as a survey finds 42% of 55 to 65 year olds play games.

Anyone growing up today will have never known a world without video games, but even for those who see it as a new concept it seems gaming is still a surprisingly popular pastime.

A survey of 2,000 adults, commissioned by Ukie’s Must Play May Campaign, found that 85% of under-35s regularly play video games, falling only to 75% for 35 to 44 year olds.

But even for those aged 55 to 64 the percentage was as high as 42%, with as many as 27% of over-65s claiming to have played a game within the last five years.

Many older games said they used games to keep their minds active, with 40% admitting they play strategy titles in particular to counter the effects of aging. Of those surveyed, 31% said they just did it for fun, and to avoid stress, while others used it as an excuse for interacting with their grandchildren.
